While the girls varsity basketball team plays at the state tournament in Huron this weekend, the boys varsity basketball team are preparing to travel even farther west. They will be playing in Rapid City next weekend, March 17-20, for the 2010 State AA Boys Basketball Tournament.
They secured a berth in the state competition after winning 41-35 against Yankton Tuesday night. The win was their final chance to qualify for state after a double over time loss against O’Gorman last Friday. Team members agreed that their win against the Bucks was very fulfilling, given the effort they have put forth this season.
“[It was] really rewarding,” said senior Nicholas Thune. “We have worked really hard.”
The team has had its ups and downs this season, but overall has worked their hardest to make it this far.
“I am so proud of our kids and they have truly earned this trip out to Rapid City,” said head coach Lee Taylor. “Last night was the kids reward for all their hard work and dedication towards each other.”
Ironically, the No. 5 ranked Riders will take on No. 4 O’Gorman in the first round of games in Rapid on Thursday.
“There is no clear cut favorite and anyone out there can win,” said Coach Taylor.
In order to take state, Thune said the Rider boys will need to exhibit their “maximum effort” through all the games and stay consistent. Sticking together and leadership seem to be an overall theme for the team this season.
“We have learned how to play for each other,” said senior Jared Bartling. “At times we lose focus, but that’s when the leaders step up and lead.”
