Themes are not uncommon to the student of RHS. The short stories read in English classes have themes, as do the essays that students write. Every year the yearbook has a theme, and since 2007, Principal Don Ryswyk has made sure that at the start of each year, RHS has a new theme which sets the tone for the upcoming school year. This year that theme is “The Key is Me.”
The theme is more than just a poster on the wall or a banner hanging in the commons. It is an idea designed to inspire and motivate the student body. Mr. Ryswyk hopes that students will understand that they already hold the key to their accomplishments and successful leadership at RHS.
“I want them to realize that they have the ultimate power over their success,” Mr. Ryswyk said. He also sees this theme applying to the staff in the building. According to Mr. Ryswyk, it is the staff member’s job to give students an opportunity at achievement.
“It’s up to every staff member and student to be academically sufficient. I hope staff will talk to their students about the most important words.”
