This Saturday, millions of people will come together to participate in the nation’s largest day of volunteering, Make a Difference Day. Sponsored by USA Weekend Magazine, this day is an opportunity for people across the country to get involved in an organized statewide, multi-state and nationwide effort to help others and change the world.

Anyone may participate in Make a Difference Day, whether it involves participation in an organized project or an individual private effort. Volunteering is only one way to help, however. Donating money to specific charities is also recommended to help spread the feeling of good will and support to those in need.

SALSA, the Serve and Learn Student Association, will offer two group service projects on Saturday in Sioux Falls:

Rake the Town – 8:30 a.m. SALSA members rake the yards of people who can’t do it themselves. Please bring a rake if possible.

Habitat for Humanity – 9 a.m. Students will be helping at a project for Habitat for Humanity by collecting bricks for a home-owner which will then be sold by the Habitat Re-Store.

Both groups will meet at the Habitat Re-Store, located at 721 E. Amidon Street, to begin their day of sharing and caring. Lunch will be provided by the Downtown Lions group. Even if you are not a member of SALSA you are encouraged to attend. Log into www.helplinecenter.org and www.makeadifferenceday.com for more information.

Here’s how some RHS students will try to make a difference in the lives of others.

“Help Mom with little sisters.” Kayla Wilmarth, 9

“Help all the handicapped.” Dawn Wilgers, 10

“Plant a tree.” Charles Mays, 11
